Prior to commencing on the various chemotherapy drugs, Kallan was flushed with fluids. This is a preventive procedure in order to protect his kidneys from damage and problems. The chemotherapy drugs also has the ability to affect Kallan's hearing and may leave him sterile. The doctors feel that as Kallan is pre-pubescent, he may be ok.
Kallan also started on anti nausea medication prior to the introduction of the chemotherapy.
The adminstration of the chemotheraphy is done in cycles. A cycle is over a 5 week period.
Day 1 - 2 types of drugs are given - Doxorubicin and Cisplatin*
Day 2 & 3 - no drugs - fluids are flushed through
Day 4 & 5 - another drug - Methotrexate*
Day 6 & 7 - rest to allow Kallan's red blood cells to rebuild
Kallan is also given an extra drug to help build his bone marrow.
* Karina was able to recall the names of the medication without hesitation and like she was talking of every day pain relief. How quickly things become familiar.
