Rough Day

It has been a pretty rough day for Kal. The morning was spent sleeping as he was comfortable after the pain doctors decided to change some of his pain meds. He still has his regional (line in neck with local being fed) and changed his PCA (morphine button) to 4 hourly orals. This will therefore stay in his system longer but does take longer time to take affect than the morphine. Along with all this he has been vomiting since late last night.

This afternoon and evening has been spent trialling with an array of anti-nausea meds. The combinations he was having during chemo do not seem to be working for him at the moment. Much to the dismay of everyone...Kal more so than anyone.

He had his drain taken from his arm today which hurt quite a bit and following that he had a trip to x-ray to check on the surgeons handy work.

We are still rotating Kal and they were hoping to get him out of bed to start some physio on his legs, but with everything still hooked up that was not possible. Kal is now helping alot more with the position changing and is now nearly able to roll on his side alone.

After the last few days we have been looking forward to Kal showing a bit more personality to which he did today. After taking some oral meds he swallowed then asked "can you give me something to knock this down with". Obviously it tasted disgusting and he wanted to rid the taste! We also have a baby in the ward the has been screaming alot..Kallan asked us if we could "go and turn that baby off". If only.....

We are not too much in New Year frame of mind but wish all a Happy New Year and hope for a damn better 2009. Have a drink for us, a few if you don't mind!

Recovery

Today marked the first day of recovery for Kallan after his major surgery. He's doing really well but still very sleepy.Even when awake he's still not himself but Dr Stalley himself said to him "your one tough little cookie".He also said that the tumor was quite large and had gotten in and around the muscle surrounding his shoulder. He explained that because of this he actually had to cut through some of the muscle and when the prosthesis was put in he was unable to re-attach some of the muscle because they were too short. As a result Kallan will lose some movement and strength in his arm but i know that in time he will understand that it's just a small price to pay. The pain team here have done a great job of keeping on top of his pain levels right from the word go.He has what they call a nerve block which is an extremely fine tube that they inserted in his neck close to the operated arm. That line has anesthetic slowly running through it which is working really well.He has morphine as back whenever he feels he needs it.He also has a drain coming from his arm aswell as a cathader(yes my eyes are watering just writing that).

After a long sleep in the afternoon he seemed a little brighter and Karina even managed to get a little giggle out of him.The docters and nurses have all remarked how wonderful he is coping considering the magnetude of his ordeal. We need to move Kal around regularly to limit the chance of blood clots and bed sores.Just moving Kal can be very painful for him but we don't hear a whimper from him,he's just an amazing kid(i may be a touch biased).

On a lighter note the iced chocolates are going down great(and regularly)and thanks to phil and the gift card(or were they business cards phil)he bought for me they will continue to do so.I'm sure my mum will fill anyone in on the business card joke if they wish

The Big Day

What a day!A later then expected start for his operation made the day extremely long for poor Kal,especially considering he had to fast for the whole day.True to form though he was in fantastic spirits all day ,even more so when Nan and Pop arrived. The call came for Kallan to be transported to theatre at about 3:30pm and he went under at about 4pm.As Kal was being wheeled away some tears emerged from Kal's eyes(mine too)and karina said his last words before going to sleep were "I'm scared mum".All up the operation took around 3 and a half hours with Dr Stalley labelling the operation a success. He also mentioned that there was quite a large tumor and it has effected some of the surrounding muscle which will result in some restriction of movement in his arm.Unfortunatelly for Kal Dr Stalley said that participation in contact sport would be extremely foolish which i know will devistate Kal and will take him some time to deal with.

Apart from that Kal came out of the operation really well and his pain was well under control. It was a very anxious wait for us all and as you would expect i was a model of patience and calmness(Karina may try and tell you otherwise).Throughout the day plenty of messages flowed from concerned family and friends.I can't thank those people enough for that. The next few days will no doubt be very tough for kal as he deals with the pain and other things but continued support like that already received will no doubt keep his spirits high.Anyway Kal another hump in the road overcome and the finish line is just that little bit closer, your mother and i love you very much and couldn't be more proud.

plenty of fun before big day

No prizes for guessing where Kallan and i spent a lot of saturday. That's right Royal Bero Golf course. In the morning Kallan,Karina and i spent a few hours together at the movies. Then it was off to bero for more golf.In the last post i mentioned how Kal has shown some real ability well that ability almost bought him his first ever birdie. The 2nd hole is a par 3 and after he put his tee shot on the green his putt was tracking straight at the hole with a bit too much speed and hit the hole but and unluckely sat cm's from the hole.Very unlucky mate but as knowlesy later said it won't be too long before the birdies start flowing.Later that evening we had a most enjoyable time at the harvey's(scott and reggie if you don't know)had many laughs and the kids just had a ball.Just what we all needed at this time.

Today was spent relaxing then getting everything together for the trip to sydney. It's a very big occasion for Kal tomorrow,a big turning point for him,but anyone who has spent time with Kal would be forgiven for thinking that he didn't have a care in the world such is his amazing attitude and just his wonderful personality. It goes without saying how proud you make me feel kal but you just seem to make me prouder with every step we take through this journey.I'll have all my fingers and toes crossed but at the same time i'm confident of the best possible outcome. So i would ask that if any of you have a bit of free time say a prayer, cross some fingers or just keep kal in your thoughts as he prepares for this huge step

Boxing Day

Big day for Kal.Firstly it was off to our regular haunt, beresfield golf course(good layout for beginners)where he's showing some real ability. We were lucky enough to be joined by my old mate knowlesy and his son Jack.Thank heaven for motorised carts that's all i can say because it was a scorcher.

In the evening we ventured to Energy Australia Stadium for the Jets v Mariners clash.Kallan's uncle Mark came with us, i think his home town team Leeds United's form rubbed off because unfortunately the night didn't end on a good note with the Mariners too good for the Jets, scoring 2 second half goals to cancel out Joel Griffiths' opener to run out 2-1 winners.A very dissapointed Kal commented that the Jets had to find some players and fast.

Shaylie had a sleepover at aunty Netty's and Ronnie's last night with cousin Saskia so i'm sure plenty of girly fun was had.Bet you had fun too Ronnie

Christmas Day

It was a very relaxing and enjoyable day for the Egar family. We just stayed home and all our loved ones came to us.His only real wish for christmas was that he could be at home with all of his family around him,It was great to see that happen.Unfortunately Kal's day wasn't without a hick up.After visiting John Hunter on christmas eve for bloods i forgot to get the nurses to change his dressing and by yesterday it was literally hanging off him.But a lovely nurse at the after hours GP service at John Hunter who had experience in changing central line dressings hung around after her shift just to change Kal's dressing,so we were very thankful to her for making it a very quick and pleasent visit.

I hope all of you who keep an eye on Kal's progress through the blog had a wonderful day and you all have a great new year.

Quick Visit

This morning Kallan was required to visit John Hunter Hospital to have some bloods taken then a visit with the doctor. After blood was taken we had a bit of a wait for the results to come through. The doctor came out and said bloods are fine and sent us on our way.It was a quicker than expected visit, not that i'm complaining.

In the afternoon Kal got the chance to meet with his poppy robbie and nanny ruth who haven't had the chance to catch up with kal. After having a play with his cousins, isaac and saskia, kal and I went to bero golf course and played a few holes. He really is enjoying his golf and has said that we have to get in a few more games before our return to sydney.

Merry christmas to you all and may 2009 bring you all that you desire.Thankyou to everyone who has made contributions to our cause no matter how great or small.

tuesday,december 23 ,2008

Kallan's day started with a trip to the motorbike shop with his uncle dave. They went looking for parts for Uncle Davids Ducati but Kal spent the time eyeing off some of the many bikes in the shop.In the afternoon Kallan and I went to the golf course where he purchased a new golf glove and had a bit of chipping and putting practise.Kallan has developed a very keen interest in golf and it's something he really wants to get into when it's all over.Fingers crossed that his operation and the rest of his treatment goes well so that he can still pursue some of his many interests.

Shaylie also had the chance to catch up with a friend that she hasn't seen for some time. She had a sleep over at jessica's house who lives a few doors down and is also one of her soccer buddies.

No rest for Karina who would normally have had today and yesterday off but as is the norm for this time of year the salon is extremely busy and she's been required to work long days as a result

A big few days!

Kallan has been enjoying being a ten year old again. On Friday Kallan had a quiet day in preparation for going to the Jets game that evening. He did get very tired though and at one time dozed off during the game! He must have been tired or how would he manage to sleep through the cheers of the crowd.

On Saturday Kallan again enjoyed the benefits of being 10 years old. He played with his friends Cody and Tyler and then Darren took Kal for a game of golf. They took a golf cart so Kallan didn't have to walk and get tired out. Hmmm....I have no details on who won, I wonder?

After golf, Kal saw a couple of his mates from soccer, Sam and Matt, playing on the oval near-by so went and had a bit of a kick of the ball for a while.

Karina tells me that today Kallan is not doing too well. He was vomiting this morning but hopefully that will pass quickly. Maybe he has just done a little to much over the last few days, who knows! It can be unpredictable. Darren was telling me one that Kallan can feel fine and then all of a sudden feel terrible and need to vomit. We are thinking of you Kallan. Glad you are able to have some fun and hope the inevitable horrible bits pass quickly.

Thursday, December 18, 2008

Today Kallan had to make the long trip back to Sydney for his pre-admission clinic. The clinic only took 1/2 hour - bloods were taken and all went well with the clinic.

Shaylie went down for the ride too, when she heard that after the clinic they would stop by the party the clinic was holding for the cancer patients. Darren reports that "shayllie was most upset after lining up for ages for a photo with Santa - there was only a present for Kal". All of us who know and love Shaylie will understand what he means when he says that Shaylie was "...not impressed at all. I know you find that hard to believe". No Darren, we do belive you!

Kallan, we are all thinking of you and are so glad that you have been able to have some fun times around this fantastic time of year. We send lots of love and kisses your way.

A Day of Fun!

Kallan had a fantasic day today. He went to the movies with his school. After the movies he went to the park with the school too. Darren says that he had a huge smile on his face when he was just "hangin' with his mates". How great that must have been for Kallan!

After the events with the school, Kal went fishing with his Pop but the heat became a little too much to handle so they left a short time later.

It is so great that Kallan is able to spend time with friends and family.

Home Sweet Home.

Today Kal was able to visit the kids at school for a while and tomorrow he is going to go to the movies with them. It is great that he can go to a few things a catch up with friends. Speaking of friends, Cody popped over for a visit this afternoon which was great. Kallan is doing really good and enjoying being at home.

The joy of being home.

Kallan is able to come home until after Christmas! I bet he thinks that is a pretty fantasitc present. He does have to return to Westmead for a pre-op clinic for one day though. Kallan looks fantastic, all things considered. Still weak and sick but was smiling and happy. I must say on a personal note that I was so gald to be able to see him and give him a hug. Last time he ws home I wasn't able to due to a cold that I was scared to pass on.

Update via Shaylie.

I missed an update phone call from Darren last night so Shaylie called fill me in this morning. I have no details about how Kallan is feeling but Shaylie did tell me that they may be coming home this afternoon. Darren and Kallan are excited to be coming home but Shaylie wants to stay at Westmead. So, what I can gather is that Kallan will be coming home for a few days but needs to go back down before Christmas.

I wish I could remember word for word my conversation with Shay, but you who know her can add the personality that I cannot convey through my relaying of the story.

Yesterday Darren took Kal and Shay to darling harbour to see the wildlife and aquarium. I didn't hear much about that other than they couldn't see the seals and the Great Barrier Reef section. Shay wasn't sure why but said, "the seals were doing sum'in (something)". I did hear lot about the trip there though. They ended up catching a bus in. Shaylie informed me to stop the bus you had to press a button. I can imagine that she was eyeing that button off if her summary of the trip is anything to go by. She said, "It just went on and on and on and on for hours". Luckily Aunty Peta came to the rescue for the trip back. Kallan's bum was sore from sitting on bus and so Aunty Pete came to pick them up and return all to where they had left the car. Then there was the search for an ATM to pay for parking where they had to walk for ages and ages, hmmm...I wonder if Shaylie was chief wheelchair pusher yesterday on the long search for an ATM?

The trip tired Kallan out but Shay was ready to play when they got back to RMH.

Shaylie informs me that today there is going to be a party and the Eel's are coming. She said that even though she doesn't like the Eel's she is excited to meet them because she has never met a football team before, but she has met other celebrities (whom she then listed). Shay informs me that Kallan is going to wear his Tigers jersey and hat to "stir them up". Shay said she doesn't want to make them mad. I heard Darren in the background say that he would sort them out. Shay then informed her dad that they would sort him out. She then told me, "They are really strong you know!" So Kallan looks to have some excitement today maintaining his loyalty to the Tigers. We'll have to see what happens a little later on. Thanks for the update Shay!

Have a great day Kallan and Shaylie.

The discovery of double-decker birds.

Kallan is feeling a bit better today and was even managing to eat a little. I think he was sharing a lot with the birds too. Kallan told me that he started a feeding frenzy among the birds when he began sharing his cheezles!

Apparently, Shaylie and only Shaylie, is incharge of pushing Kallan's wheelchair. So when Kallan and Darren picked Shay up from school today Shay pushed Kallan down to look at the birds. When they got there, there were a couple of birds pecking at each other. Saylie asked what they were doing and her wise older brother told her that they were "smooching". She was quite concerned that they may have been fighting. Kallan assured her they were only smooching. As Shaylie asked again if Kallan was sure, one bird jumped on top of the other, and Kallan said, "What does that tell you?" Shay still not convinced that all was ok asked what they were doing and Kallan informed her they were making a double-decker bird and that they were "in-love".

Shaylie obviously quite ill...

Darren is concerned about Shaylie and thinks he may have to get her seen by the doctors too. She did not want to go to the Starlight room today - not even once!

More ups than downs on Tuesday, 9 December 2008.

Kallan had a day of ups and downs today, but happily, there were more ups and downs. He is fighting hard and manages to climb over the bumps along the way. He can be feeling fine but all of a sudden need to vomit. He was sad to see his mum have to return to Maitland to work and is looking forward to the prospect of being able to come home for a few days.

We can contrast Kallan's experience at Westmead - while Kallan deals with treatment and nausea Shalylie is having the time of her life! She is staying with Darren and Kallan for the next few days. She brings some fun and joy to the day!

Monday, 8 December 2008

Kallan got out of hospital today. He is still feeling off but is much better but not his best. He has an appointment on Thursday and after that he gets to return to home in Rutherford.

He has to return to hospital on the 18 December for another appointment and then again on the 29 December for his operation.

On a personal note, I, along with my family, are venturing overseas for six weeks. Aunty Annette will take over update details for a while until I can gain internet access. Bon voyage!

Sunday, 7 December 2008

It was a very trying day for all today. Kallan has been really emotional and basically has had enough of feeling like crap.

He did brighten up a little when he met a young girl who had suffered the same cancer as Kallan when she was 10. She is now 17. Darren met her at Ronald McDonald House while having breakfast this morning. She stayed there while having her treatment and dropped in. She asked to meet with Kallan after talking with Darren. She spent about half an hour with Kallan. This young girl featured on RPA - her operation (bone removal, radiation, etc) was done 7 years ago and took 11 hours. Her treatment back then was experimental and she was only the sixth person in Australia to have this treatment. The treatment is now tried and proven.

Nanny T and Uncle David also had a visit with Kallan today. He enjoyed having his back tickled by Nan - at one time she stopped and he asked for her to continue. Must've felt nice.

Another Kallanism

Today I asked Kallan how much weight he has lost now. This is his response.

" The RSPCA weighed me wrong to start with"

He meant the RPA - it was quite funny.

Saturday, 6 December 2008

Kallan had a much better day today. A marked improvement on yesterday. He is still have morphine for his throat and fluids after his round of chemotherapy.

He was able to leave the hospital (momentary) this afternoon. It was enough to have a little break but he was eager (no pun intended) to return to his bed.

Shaylie spent more time in the Starlight Room.

Kallan, Darren, Shaylie and Nanny Carol had a visit from Uncle Willy, Aunty Allison, Chelsea, Aiden and Campbell today. It was nice to see him and have a snuggle with him on his bed. It will be my last visit for over 6 weeks.

An Apology

Apparently Miss Shaylie was most upset that I didn't mention her in the Take 5 magazine article that is going to be published. I indicated that it was an article about Kallan when in actual fact it is about the WHOLE family.

Sorry Shaylie.

Friday, 5 December 2008

Kallan was pretty ordinary today. Everything has caught up with him - throat infection, surgery, delay of chemotherapy and then the start of chemotherapy again. He had bearly recovered from the surgery and then the chemotherapy was started.

He was vomitting a bit as well.

Why his surgery took so long was because the "stuff" around his lines had calcified. Rather than being slimy, it had become hard and required a lot more work to remove it. The doctors had a bit of a hard time removing it all - the reason for the long surgery. The unfortunate thing is that it can happen again. The surgery was done through Kallan's groin.

Shaylie has found two new boyfriends - two FRENCH boyfriends. She spent some time with them yesterday. Bippy, Boppy and Santa Clause were at the house today. Shaylie bopped away with them. I know you aren't going to believe this, but she also spent some time in the Starlight room (again).

Nanny Carol is still at the hospital helping out with the Shaylie and Kallan.

Thursday, December 4, 2008

Thursday, 4 December 2008

It was a really long day for Kallan today. He had surgery to clear the blockage in his central line. It is normally a procedure that takes 30 minutes but Kallan's surgery took nearly three hours. He spent a lot of time sleeping afterwards.

Chemotherapy starts tomorrow.

Darren took Shaylie to the movies today to see High School Musical 3.

Wednesday, December 3, 2008

Wednesday, 3 December 2008

Kallan in on the improve. He is well enough to have surgery tomorrow to fix his central line.

Once fixed, chemotherapy will start again - probably on the weekend.

Celebrity Update

Karina had a call today from Take 5 magazine. They want to do an article on Kallan. They got wind of the story via the Maitland Mercury.

I am not sure when the article will be published but will post it on the blog when the details are known.
Kallan is improving. He has been able drink and eat - although only little bits. He had another MRI today as the others ones weren't too clear and they couldn't even find them.

He spent some time back at Ronald McDonald House today to attend a Christmas Party. He got some fly wheels and accessories.

After the Christmas Party he spent some time "chatting" via web cam with some of his school friends. He really enjoyed it.

Shaylie skipped school today in order to attend the Christmas Party. After the party she spent ages in the Starlight room (again).

Karina returned home for work.

Nanny & Pop had a visit with Kallan today. Carol has stayed in Sydney to look after Shaylie as Darren is looking after Kallan while he is still in the Ward.

Monday, December 1, 2008

Kallan is in a right old mess. He is not well. He looks terrible (Karina's words) with big red, swollen and puffy eyes. His lips are split, and needs his mouth swabbed to keep it clean and germ free as he has mouth ulcers. He can't talk and if he does, he has a husky old man's voice. He has spent the last two days in bed. He is very lethargic. On a positive note, he has not been vomitting.

Kallan takes a lot of medication orally. Due to the soreness of his throat, he is now given this intravenously. His throat is also numbed to aid him in eating and drinking (not that he is doing much of that).

Kallan said this is the worst he has felt during the whole ordeal.

I mentioned yesterday that there appeared to be some issues with his central line. Today Kallan had some xrays which confirmed a blockage in both lines. Things can go in but not out. As Kallan is required to have regular bloods taken, this is a problem. The blockage has been described as a flat straw that has been chewed - things can go one way, but not the other.

To correct the blockage, surgery is required. Surgery can not be performed until Kallan's throat has cleared, and the chemotherapy can not start until the blockage is cleared.

Shaylie is spending the week in Sydney. She got there at lunch time today. After lunch she spent some time doing some Christmas craft. She went to school in the afternoon and then spent a lot of time in the Starlight Room. When she came home from the Starlight Room she had a bad of goodies/prizes that she had won.

Sounds like she is having fun.

Sunday, November 30, 2008

Sunday, 30 November 2008

Kallan remains in hospital. He is receiving some morphine based medication for his throat. His magnesium levels are good but there are some issues with taking blood from his central line. This will be investigated further.

As Kallan has a throat infection, they may even delay the next lot of chemotherapy until he is well.

Saturday, November 29, 2008

Kallan's bloods were down to a satisfactory level but his magnesium levels weren't. They are still low and he had to stay in Sydney in case of cramping (he experienced these last weekend). If he was to cramp, he would require more magnesium via a drip as opposed to tablets.

This evening Kallan was admitted back to hospital as he has a throat infection.

On a side note, as mentioned earlier, Kallan was involved in Breakdancing. He stopped doing the Breakdancing when his shoulder started to hurt. If he was able to continue with his dancing, he would have been involved in the annual concert tonight. It was hard to watch the other boys perform knowing that Kallan was able, and used to do, all the moves. Another day Kal, another day.

Friday, 28 November 2008

Kallan was released from hospital today. He does have to go back tomorrow and have more bloods taken as his levels are still to high. He was also given a big dose of magnesium.

Chemotheraphy starts again on Monday evening.

Prior to leaving hospital he got into the festive spirit with a few nurses, Santa and Ben 10.

Thursday, 27 November 2008

Kallan has been feeling good all day until around 8 pm tonight. He started to feel off and had a little vomit. He has had a sore throat for most of the day as well.

Kallan got some mail today. He got a heap of cards from his school mates. It was a really good "pick me up" and he got a kick out of it.

Wednesday, 26 November 2008

Kallan had a much better day today. He has been feeling pretty good but still very tired.

He spent some time playing his guitar and even started to compose a Christmas song.

Tuesday, 25 November 2008

Kallan has been a bit crook this morning. He is feeling better but is extremely tired. He has also been a bit emotional today. We love you Kal.

Guess What

And the 2009 Bandaged Bear poster boy goes to ... Kallan Egar!

Yep that is right. You may recall from an earlier post, that Kallan was involved in a photographic shoot to be a potential poster boy for the Bandaged Bear organisation. Well he was selected. Our very own little celebrity. I am first in line for an autograph!

Bank Account Details

A lot of people have been requesting details in relation to the bank account that has been established.

To clarify, the account is in the name of "Kallan Egar Support Fund" and is NOT a trust. It is a normal account that has an ABN number, that is to be audited each year, and will operate for a few years. It is intended to use the money to cover costs associated with Kallan's recovery.

Details of the account can be found to the right of the Blog.

* Should people require a receipt, please email trelf@netcentral.com.au. Also, to help, if people could please email trelf@netcentral.com.au once a deposit is made as we do not have internet access at this stage.

Kallan had an early start this morning ready for his return to Westmead Hospital. He has been admitted to the Ward to begin his chemotherapy (again). Bloods were taken, fluids are being administered all in preparation for the commencement of the drugs which will start tomorrow.

He was exhausted after yesterday. When Karina and Darren returned to pick him up from Nanny's house, he was sound asleep. (He was sound asleep and had to be woken in order to meet Steve Simpson).

WHAT A DAY!!!! Fanbloodytastic.

Kallan's Benefit Day went off with a bang. The wind and rain did nothing to dampen (pun intended) anyones spirits. The jumping castle was moved inside, the barefoot bowls was cancelled but the party continued.

Kallan was able to attend, although he did go home for a rest, and then came back to meet Steve Simpson of the Knights.

The community rallied and dug deep to raise a HUGE $24,000+.

Don't Forget

Kallan's Benefit Day
Maitland City Bowls, Sports & Recreation Club
Arthur Street, Rutherford
11 am - 5 pm

See you there!

Saturday, 22 November 2008

Kallan has had a very lazy day today. He has spent most of the day laying around and just taking it easy. He still doesn't have much of an appetite and finds it hard to eat something. He did have half an apple but that didn't even stay down.

Friday, 21 November 2008

Kallan and Shaylie were treated to a tour of Prydes (a lolly factory) today. They got to take a few samples with them. Kallan was also given a Nintendo DS and two games. How fun.

Kallan also went to visit with his class mates. It has been a long 9 weeks since he has seen any of them. He didn't stay long.

New Hats

Check out Kallan and Shaylie's new hats - they have a "Kallanism" on them - "I am allergic to homework".

These hats will available to purchase at Kallan's Benefit Day - $20.00 each. If sold out, orders will be taken.

Thursday, 20 November 2008

Kallan started the day off vomitting. He had to attend the John Hunter Hospital Oncology clinic for his regular blood check and Doctor visit. His electrolites are low and as a result is required to take daily magnesium tablets morning and night.

While at the clinic he started to get leg cramps. By the time he got home, the cramps had moved from his legs to his groin. Darren called the Oncology Ward for advice. Kallan was given some medication and the cramps have settled.

Wednesday, 19 November 2008

Kallan had a pretty good day today. He did have a little meltdown as he is not able to do anything of what he used to do or what he would like to do.

He did venture outdoors for a moment to hire a wheelchair. Even though this was a short outing, he found it very straining and needed to rest afterwards.

While Kallan was in John Hunter Hospital, it was revealed that he had a big back up of poo. Usually one of the side effects of the chemotherapy is diarrhoea - Kallan has the opposite - constipation. He was able to do a poo today. Sorry for the details, but it is all part of the effects of Kallan's illness.

Shaylie has been unable to see Kallan since he has been home as she has a cold. She is in "quarantine".

Tuesday, November 18, 2008

Tuesday, 18 November 2008

Guess who made the FRONT page of the Herald - yep Kallan. The article gave a brief insight into Kallan's illness and treatment. It also promoted his benefit day on Sunday 23 November.

Here is a link for people who have not seen the article -

http://www.theherald.com.au/news/local/news/General/kallans-friends-rally-to-his-cause/1362651.aspx

Kallan got another special visitor today.

Kurt Gidley of the Knights, popped in after reading the article in the paper. He brought along a bunch of goodies as well - footy boots and a signed picture of himself. What a top bloke.

Kallan is out of hospital and has returned home. It is suggested that if people wish to visit Kallan that prior contact be made with Karina and Darren as Kallan is really susceptible to infection. If Kallan was to get an infection, it would make him extremely ill and he would have to return to hospital. We appreciate your understanding and thank you for your patience.

Monday, 17 November 2008

Kallan remains in the John Hunter Hospital. He has improved and is now rehydrated. His blood levels have risen and are almost back to normal.

No news as to when he may be released.

Sunday, November 16, 2008

Sunday, 16 October 2008

Kallan has not been well since coming home. He has been really exhausted and started vomitting.

He has been administered to John Hunter Hospital were he has been receiving fluids to keep him hydrated. He was due to attend John Hunter Hospital tomorrow for his regular blood testing.

Here's hoping to a quick "recovery" so he can home again.

Love you Kal.

Saturday, 15 November 2008

Kallan is HOME! His real home. He was so relieved and thrilled to be able to come home. He has so wanted this for such a long tme. Kallan cried with joy on being told that he was allowed to come home.

He is required to attend John Hunter Hospital for regular checks and is due to return to Westmead for treatment (again) commencing Monday, 24 November.

What an absolute thrill it was see him and Darren out of hospital. Despite feeling crappy, tired and lethargic, you couldn't wipe the smile from his face.

Friday, November 14, 2008

Friday, 14 November 2008

Kallan made his television debut today despite feeling crappy. He appeared on "Sunrise". After his brief appearance, all he wanted was a bath and a lie down.

After having a sleep, he felt a lot better. They headed off to the bike presentation at Manly. Darren has sworn never to live in Sydney for as long as he lives. The drive to Manly took its toll on Kallan and he wasn't the best when they arrived.

Kallan was meant to be presented with a mountain bike - it turned out to be a BMX bike. To make the day even worse, they weren't even allowed to take the bike as it hadn't been cleared by a safety technician who neglected to turn up.

Kallan feels a lot better now that he is home and rested (and out of the heat).

Thursday, November 13, 2008

Thursday, 13 November 2008

Kallan had a very emotional day today. He so wants to come home - his real home in Rutherford. He misses his family and friends immensely.

I went to visit Kallan today (spur of the moment - I was feeling his emotion and needed a Kallan cuddle) along with Uncle David (who flew in late last night). He was still very emotional when we got there. He looked sad and low. I told him to have a good cry, let it all out and don't be embarrassed as often after a good cry you feel better. It turned out that he, along with David and I, were in tears.

Kallan was really focused on Christmas today. He desperately would love to home for Christmas. He did concede that if he was in hospital he hoped all his family could come to him. How precious. Kallan added that it was his turn to put the star on the top of the Christmas tree this year.

Whilst visiting with Kallan, he was released from the Ward. He is still feeling off and had a few tummy pains this afternoon. He did enjoy some KFC for lunch - although it did take some time to eat. He is still very tired and obviously needed to rest/sleep.

Fundraiser Update

A brilliant and fun day has been planned. The day kicks off at 11 am and finishes at 5pm. Activities involve a jumping castle, barefoot bowls, face painting, balloon shaping, magician, bbq, tropical snow cones, monster raffle, live auctions and other activities.

Tell your family, friends and neighbours - all are welcome. See you there.

Wednesday, 12 November 2008

Poor little bugger started vomitting this morning. His day has been pretty ordinary. Kallan has been feeling quite weak, lethargic and sleepy. He vomitted a few times this morning but has not since. He has only eaten half a peanut butter sandwich all day.

Kallan was too sick for school and his guitar lesson.

Darren said that even though Kallan has gone down hill a bit, it is a marked improvement on his last encounter with these drugs.

On a more positive note, Kallan has been selected by "Cure Our Kids" to receive a new mountain bike on Friday.

The TV Star

Kallan didn't make it on tv but Darren did. Darren was on the Today Show this morning promoting McHappy Day. Copy the following link for a look at the footage.

Tuesday, 11 November 2008

Fantastic news. Kallan has coped really well with this round of chemo. He has not vomitted at all. Darren says that he is 1000% better than last time. He still feels off but a huge improvement on last time.

Kallan has been given a different anti-nausea drug, along with his other ones. This is a new drug (only released within the last two weeks) and seems to be working wonders. Last time they lost count of how many times he vomitted within the first 24 hours. This time, nil.

The new anti nausea drug is a high dose one and can only be given once a day, thus the need for the others.

Kallan has managed to eat - toast only. At least it is something as last time he didn't eat for quite a few days.

He has been sleeping heaps and at one point woke and asked his school teacher for some work today - he must be feeling good or they are VERY GOOD drugs.

Monday Update

Kallan had a good morning. A lady in his Ward asked Kallan what was wrong with him. He explained everything and even detailed the drugs that he was taking. He told her that the drugs he has to take "sure pack a punch".

He also had school, a guitar lesson (and even recorded a song).

Since he has started the chemo drugs he has started to feel sick and is off his food. He has pretty much slept all afternoon.

Monday, 10 November 2008

As Kallan spent the evening at Chris Brown's concert, his chemo drugs were scheduled to start late last night. Prior to the drugs being introduced, he was pumped with fluids. They hooked the chemo drugs up at lunch time today.

No reports have been received apart from Kallan having a big sleep this afternoon.

"Bloody Awesome"

That is Kallan's response to Chris Brown's concert. "Not good, bloody awesome".

Hot Off the Press

Here are shots Karina sent me of Chris Brown's concert.

Idol Update

It appears as if he wasn't on tonight. It was mentioned that Monday night might be the night. Tune it at 7.30 pm.

Sunday, 9 November 2008

Kallan had a quiet and easy day today. He spent some time feeding the ducks in the river right near Ronald McDonald house this morning. Nan, Pop and Noni came to visit and when they arrived, Kallan took them and showed them the ducks.

Shaylie returned to Maitland with Nan and Pop.

Tonight Kallan and Karina have gone to a concert. Not just any concert, but CHRIS BROWN'S. They even have their own box seat. (This is required as Kallan's immune system is low and he can't associate/mingle with the general population).

More news to follow tomorrow.

Saturday, November 8, 2008

Australian Idol

Don't forget to watch Idol on Sunday night - 7.30 pm on Channel 10.

Saturday, 8 November 2008

Kallan had a pretty quiet day today. I guess it was needed after all the galavanting that he has done lately.

Shaylie spent some time shopping with a friend and her friends mother.

Darren and Kallan bought themselves a DVD each from JB HiFi. Kallan spent some time replying to emails - he is quiet a popular boy.

Darren, the Chef, cooked Kallan his favourite dish for tea - chicken enchiladas. What a great Dad!

More Fun

As if Luna Park wasn't enough fun for one day, Kallan joined the band to play the bongos'. Too much fun!

Friday, 7 November 2008

The Egar's went to Luna Park today and got to hang out with MORE celebrities! Becoming quite the get abouts!

A very good day was had by all. A few random shots from the day.

Aaaahhhh

Visitors

Kallan was able to enjoy some time with a variety of visitors. Aunty Allison (me), Uncle Will, Chelsea, Aiden and Campbell took a day off work and school to spend the day with Kallan. It was great. We were naughty and had McDonalds at Ronald McDonald house for lunch.

Kallan had an appointment with his Doctor after lunch. This was in preparation for his next round of Chemo which starts on Sunday.

Shaylie and Chelsea were stuck together all day. They spent time together cleaning the toy cupboard in the TV room. They didn't get very far as they got bored and distracted and went outside to play.

Kallan also had some more visitors later in the afternoon. Kym, Justin, Courtney, Jordan and Brody McKinney came by for a visit. Kallan and Brody spent some time hanging out alone. It was great to see.

Thursday, 6 November 2008

Kallan had a busy day today. He spent the morning "hanging" with the "dudes" from Australia Idol. Total Girl - a teeny bopper magazine, was there to celebrate its
6th birthday. The final 4 Idol guys (Teale, Mark, Luke and Wes) were there to help "get the party started". Kallan was selected to cut the cake.

Kallan is going to be appearing on Idol on Sunday night. It is almost certain that Shaylie will be appearing as well as her teacher said she followed the camera everywhere. That is not like our Miss Shaylie!

Shaylie and Chelsea managed to score some autographs.

Shaylie also spent some time hanging with this group of singing sensations (not really sure who they are).

Wednesday, November 5, 2008

Wednesday, 5 November 2008

Kallan had another good day today. He spent the morning at school and was going to return this afternoon.

In his break from school, Kallan checked his emails. Instead of going back to school, he spent the afternoon replying to emails from his school friends.

Tuesday, November 4, 2008

Shaylie

Shaylie has/is spending the week in Sydney. She attended school today.

The format for the day is school until 12.30 pm. She then has a break for an hour and then returns to school until 3 pm.

When school is out, Shaylie spends a few hours in the Starlight Room where she can do craft, watch movies, play games - basically have a great time.

Yesterday she was caught bopping away to High School Musical - how fun.

Tuesday, 4 November 2008

Kallan had another good day. He got a visit from "Giggles" from Camp Quality.

Kallan was also involved in a photo shoot for the Bandaged Bear campaign. He could potentially be the poster boy for any of their campaigns. The photographers said he was a "natural". Our very own little celebrity.

A Lost Wallet!

You may not believe this but, ...

Yesterday two big security guards went to Kallan's room in the Ward looking for Darren. Karina was worried wondering what Darren had gotten up to. They were actually wanting Darren to go to their office to collect his lost wallet.

Still true to form.

(For those of you who may not know, Darren is renound for losing his wallet).

A Visit From Nan and Pop

I neglected to mention that Nan and Pop spent the day with Kallan yesterday (sorry).

On arrival, Pop revealed his shaved head. Kallan removed his cap and said "hey you have a hair cut like me". Great to see that he hasn't lost his sense of humour.

Monday, November 3, 2008

Monday, 3 November 2008

Kallan had a really good and eventful day. He did a bit of schooling this morning and was able to have a hit on the drums and a strum on the guitar.

After school, Kallan spent a lot of time with some animals that had come for a visit. There were goats, rabbits, lambs and a calf. There was also a cattle dog that had fun chasing after a ball.

Kallan is hoping to go home tomorrow. His levels are still being monitored. He has been given a drug to help him wee in order to bring his levels back to a normal range.

Sunday, November 2, 2008

Visitors

Kallan's chemotherapy comprises of three types of drugs. The first two are administered together whilst the third he has separately.

Kallan is scheduled to commence the first two drugs (again) on Friday. As he reacted very badly to these drugs last cycle, it is requested that should you wish to visit, please do so before Friday.

A further post will be added when Kallan is able to tolerate visitors.

Thank you.

The "Real" Ronald McDonald

Today Shaylie and Saskia were playing at home - Ronald McDonald House, and who should put in an appearance - a real human Ronald McDonald. The girls were a little frightened and apprehensive at first and just stared at him.

Ronald had a red hanky and pulled it out to blow his nose. He blew his nose (very loudly) and once finished he rolled up the hanky to give to Shaylie. Shaylie did not want to take it so the girls ran away. Ronald chased after them and the girls were running and screaming. Later Shaylie was riding a bike and Ronald caught sight of her. When Shaylie realised, she pedalled her little heart out. Apparently it, and Ronald, were so funny.

Doesn't Shaylie look so happy?

Sunday, 2 November 2008

Kallan had a good day today. He had a visit from Nanny, Aunty Karen, Uncle Mark, Isaac and Saskia. The day was spent having kisses and cuddles with Mum, hand holding with Mum and Nanny, time in the playground and building of a new Lego.

Kallan has a sore and sensitive head due to his hair loss. He still has some hair, although it is minimal and what is left is really fluffy. He suffers from a sore mouth and is required to rinse his mouth with a mouthwash 4 times a day. He is also off his food. These are all very common side affects from the chemotherapy.

On a positive note, it is obvious that the chemotherapy is working as Kallan has a lot more movement in his arm. He uses it, leans on it, and more importantly, does not need pain medication for it.

Bandanna Day

Yesterday was National Bandanna Day. The funds raised go towards CanTeen.

CanTeen is a program that is "designed to support, develop and empower young people living with cancer, to help them take back control of their lives".

Their camps "bring together patients, the brothers and sisters of patients, and the sons or daughters of patients, so they can learn about cancer and share their experiences with each other".

Here are Chelsea and Aiden showing their support - (Aiden's pout is due to him not looking at the camera).

Where Is My Princess?

Darren is missing his princess Shaylie desperately. She is missing him too. She is venturing down to Sydney tomorrow to catch up.

On a personal note, Darren is and always has been a wonderful father and husband. We, (his in-laws), are so blessed to have him as part of our family. We all marvel at his popularity with his nieces and nephews - they hang off him. We love him, support him and are so proud of him.

Saturday, 1 November 2008

Kallan didn't wake up very well this morning. To cope, he went back to sleep for a few more hours. By mid afternoon he was feeling better but was still very tired and by late afternoon he was eating and drinking.

Kallan is virtually bald now apart from a little bit of hair on top. He has handled his baldness quite well and makes comments on it - at least he will save money on shampoo and conditioner!

Friday, October 31, 2008

Friday, 31 October 2008

Kallan didn't start the day off well. He was vomitting a bit in the morning but came good around lunch time.

Kallan spent the day in the clinic having fluids prior to his next round of Methotrexate. The Methotrexate commenced earlier this evening. He is coping well with it so far.

Darren said that Kallan's hair is getting very thin. As Poppy Robbie would say, all good men are bald, the rest they put hair on!

Thursday, October 30, 2008

Thursday, 30 October 2008

Kallan has been feeling pretty good today. He had a quiet day and spent some time with his birds at the avairy.

At Westmead Hospital they have a Starbucks cafe. Darren has taken a liking to the iced chocolates. Kallan enjoyed (all) of his father's iced chocolate!

Good on ya Kal.

Wednesday, October 29, 2008

Wednesday, 29 October 2008

Kallan had a really good day today. Kallan and Darren visited the hospital today, not for treatment, but to visit with some reptilian creatures from the Reptile Park. There were snakes, turtles, lizards, a massive frog chameleon, and other things. There was even a dingo.

Kallan wasn't able to visit long with the creatures as he had to have a CT scan and xrays of his arm. This was required for measurement purposes to allow for a customed made prosthesis to be made to fit his arm after his operation.

After this, Kallan and Darren went window shopping at Westfield Parramatta. (Can you imagine it, two guys shopping together - how funny).

Tuesday, October 28, 2008

Tuesday, 28 October 2008

Kallan was able to go home today. His bloods returned good results which is the cue for him to return home.

He also was able to have a visit from Aunty Leyanne and Uncle Steve.

This is what the boys got up to ...

Kallan's hair has started falling out. To avoid a little distress, it was decided to clip it off. Darren and Steve went out in sympathy/support for Kallan.

Kallan was a little upset at first about losing his hair but soon warmed to the new "do".

Monday, October 27, 2008

Monday, 27 October 2008

Kallan had fun with "Blondie" last night - at Darren's expense. Kallan and Blondie were wetting Darren with filled syringes. They were telling Darren that it wasn't water but "wiz" in the syringe. I can just hear Kallan's giggle right now.

Kallan spent the day in bed today. He over exerted himself yesterday due to having visitors. Visitors are few and far between that he "packed" a lot into the day as he wanted to make the most of it and didn't want to miss out. I was one of those visitors. I often asked Kallan if he needed to rest and that I wouldn't be offended if he needed to. His reply was that he was fine. Karina made him have a rest after lunch.

Being in bed didn't stop school. The teacher came to him! (No chucking sickies there!). He also enjoyed a guitar lesson.

Kallan is still in the Ward and has not returned home. The drug levels are still to high to release him to home. They are hoping that the levels will return to normal tomorrow.

As another means/way to communicate with Kallan, I have created a hotmail account for him. His email address is:

Father and Son

The photo speaks for itself.

Sunday, 26 October 2008

I got to visit Kallan today!! He looked fantastic. He was at the bird avairy (again). I think this acts like a therapy for him. He was happily explaining and naming all the birds to his cousin Chelsea. Pop has taught him what the types of birds are.

We spent some time in the playground where they restled a crocodile and had some fun on the pirate ship. Kallan is a bit restricted as he has potassium and fluids constantly "fed" to him. You may notice from some of the photos.

After some playtime, we had some lunch. After lunch we had another very short play as Kallan was getting tired (despite him saying he wasn't). Kallan was taken back to his room for a rest.

Kallan was popular today - he also had a visit from Jo, Mick, Shannon and Hayley Threlfo. What a busy day.

Karina also returned to spend a few days with Kallan until she is due at work again. Shaylie has decided to stay back in Maitland this week.
